West Essex Judo Club was established in 2009 by Tom Cousins and Faith Pitman.

All ages and abilities are catered for, members are welcome from 5 years of age onwards and our oldest member is 70!

The Coaches

Both Tom Cousins and Faith Pitman are UKCC level 2 coaches, with current first aid, safeguarding certificates and full DBS disclosures. They have both been part of the Cadet, Junior and Senior British Squad.

Tom has been studying judo for over 33 years and coaching for the past 13 years. His competitive career highlights include 10 national championship gold medal victories, U21 World Championships silver medal, two Junior European gold medals and silver in the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and gold in the 2004 Auckland commonwealth judo Championships.

Highlights of his coaching career include training and coaching support at the 2008 Rio De Janeiro World Championships. Head technical coach for the South-West Judo England Excell sessions.

Faith has been in the sport of judo for over 22 years, having several Grand Prix and World Cup Medals, a 7th place in the Rio de Janeiro World Championships and a number of National titles. Faith was also the reserve for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

After winning a bronze medal in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Faith retired from competition and the GB squad to focus on coaching.

The Sport

Judo has a proven track record in engaging children and teenagers. It channels energy and misbehaviour issues into a positive and competitive environment with a clear grading system to provide structure, focus and a pathway. Other judo values include, full body exercise, ideal for both male and females of all ages, discipline, self-control, sportsmanship, it also builds confidence and is a great form of self-defence.

Each session focuses on the positive principles of judo while offering practical judo training in a fun and energetic environment.

We will teach your child comprehensive judo skills and techniques. This will develop their self-confidence, physical, mental and social awareness, improve their fitness, to name but a few of the benefits. It is also a good way to help young people learn simple discipline and etiquette and how to direct energy in a positive and constructive way.
